A nice noise.
Some guy drives by most evenings in some sort of tuned import…I don’t know what, it’s dark and I’m looking at the computer- not out the window. It’s not that loud but is obviously turbo-charged because the aftermarket blow-off valve sounds great and everytime I hear it I want to get my old rusting car back on the road that I dumped money into and then promptly took the insurance off of.
On the other hand there are many bikers and firetrucks that know just when to go by, siren blaring or full throttle – whatevers louder. Usually when I’ve just gotten Ethan to sleep and jumped into the shower quickly before he wakes up…
That being said, now that I’m a father, if I ever do get my old car back on the road perhaps I’m mature enough to put the stock muffler back on, show some consideration for others and their sleeping infants and not get so much joy out of setting off car alarms.
…mmm…not very likely actually.
Can’t work in my underwear anymore…
Next Monday I start a full time job with Navarik . This is muchos excitamondo for me as it’s a golden opportunity to learn and grow in my chosen occupation, but also work with a bunch of really fabulous people. Always get those ‘new job nerves’ despite the fact that I’ve been doing contract work with them for awhile now…It’s just not the same.
That being said I’m sitting here with the sun shining in, window open and music blaring groovin’ to tunes and realize I will certainly miss this aspect of working at home. Short commute, fridge with my food in it and coffee machine steps away replaced with headphones and restrained chair wiggling, fridges full of other’s tupperware and rubbermaid, and public transportation-.
Spring and my little trees
Spring brings with it infatuation for a hobby I grow to love more and more each year and that is taking care of many of my little ‘projects’ or ‘potensai (potential bonsai-although I hesitate to even call them that)’ around the house, back porch and yard. Spring is when much of the work of the hobby takes place as the trees are prepared for the growing season ahead.
The other interesting aspect is the documenting of the trees over time and noting the changes. This is something I don’t do nearly as much as I would like to and I think having a digital camera would really help in this regard. I love the idea of a blog as a bonsai diary to record changes and development of trees and have been looking for good examples of some. Recently found the Bonsai Apprentice which is interesting for those into this sort of falderal, but on the hunt for more.

One of my favorite books in my small bonsai library because of this ‘changes over time’ aspect is Martin Treasure’s Bonsai Life Histories. It’s quite inspiring and a confidence builder to see the starting point of many of his trees, how he went about transforming them, to the finished or well developed tree at the end.
Lions, Witches, & Closets
The fact that a movie is being made of C.S. Lewis’ ‘The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe’ to come out this December is old news I guess, but an exciting new discovery for me and one for which my anticipation will exceed that of the Lord of the Rings movies. Mostly because, like many, that series of books were bed time stories read to me when young, later read on my own, and then later as part of the curriculum in school.
The stories and images are bound up in reflections of the imagination of my youth. After the Lord of the Rings trilogy my expectations will be pretty high and by the looks of some of the teaser material they’ve released on the movie it should contain the same attention to detial, richness, and depth of that trilogy.
This article disturbs me though ;that Christians should be marketing and marketed to in such a way.
