My son managed to get some time on my system this evening. This wouldn’t be an issue if he was a little older, but not having reached three yet his keyboard technique leaves a little to be desired. I’d heard that young children can do amazing and baffling things if left with a computer for even a moment and can now verifiy they do posess some instinctive technological skills. How, in less than 10 seconds, he was able to get BitComet, my bittorrent client, menus to read in arabic is beyond me.

Bang a gong

We had planned to visit Hong Kong this year and we traditionally do that during Chinese New Year so the family is on holiday and can spend a little more time with us. As it turned out we’re having another baby instead so our travel plans are postponed for a year…or two…or three.

It looks like Vancouver’s China Town is the closest we’ll get. We’d never been to the the parade before and had a great afternoon yesterday watching the costumes, lions, dragons, firecrackers and other traditional parade essentials.

Ikea makes a bonsai turntable

Posted in Bonsai by darren on the January 25th, 2006

I bet they don’t even know it.  Last weekend I took my son to Ikea to play on the childrens furniture and eat cheap hotdogs. Actually it was to pick up a shoe rack that was on sale, but  what I found was even more exciting.  I’ve been wanting a turntable for working on my bonsai for ages and here I find a perfectly suitable substitute at Ikea in the form of >a small lazy-susan< for under 10 bucks. Sweet.

Lobby sequence

Posted in Life by darren on the January 25th, 2006

I had an interesting morning. I’d never been to the Provincial Court building before. Used to work just down the road from it but never had the opportunity or circumstance to visit. I woke up this morning and realized with a start that I had a 9:30 interview with a Crown Council regarding an accident I’d witnessed quite some time ago. Missed my bus, ran for the skytrain and managed to get there with some time to spare. Never having been there I hadn’t expected the security. Empty pockets, go through the metal detector, and the whole shpeal. It reminded me of the Matrix skyscraper lobby sequence…with the exception that I was only armed with chapstick and $3.25 in change.

Despite all the excitement I still needed coffee when I got to work…lots of it.

Missing Photoshop thumbnails?

Posted in Updates by darren on the January 24th, 2006

I only just discovered today that I could restore the thumbnail view of my .psd files that had dissapeared who knows when. Evidently with a Photoshop CS they stopped supporting thumbnail view in Explorer in order to promote use of their in application file management, now Bridge. In the event there’s anyone else who’s missed seeing thumbnails in their Windows Explorer >here’s a fix<.
