A Lazier mind

Posted in Life by darren on the May 25th, 2007

I’m enjoying  a post from one of the blogs I pull into Google Reader piped through my Google homepage and I’m very concious of the fact that it’s a moderately short post.

If it was longer I may not bother to read it for the length, and if it was shorter I may not bother to read it fearing it fluff.

What has happened to me? I want everything in snippets and small bits-too lazy to read a tome- but want everything I read to be very meaningful stuff. I want my cake and to eat it to… I didn’t used to be that way. I used to revel in the adventure of steaming through a book hundreds or even more than a thousand pages long. Although great profundity can be found in few words often it just isn’t possible and I’m scared I’m losing my ability to access more complex information locked in pages and essays.

Damn you Google and the convenience with which you serve me the information I want! You are make my brains to…you make me…I r getting….stupid.

Good bye old friend

Last week I said goodbye to my old Plymouth Laser.   A 16 year old and his mechanic dad and mom drove nine hours from Prince George to come and pick it up. It was a graduation gift for the son and dad spent the day in our driveway getting it running again. Then they drove off.

I was at work when they left but Amy got some video of them pulling away and she said she cried a little.   Lots of good memories there.

Hitchens/Wilson Debate

Posted in Christianity by darren on the May 10th, 2007

Douglas Wilson’s look at Christopher Hitchen’s book on his blog has been followed by an informal internet debate going on over the course of this month evidently of which they are on the second installment at this point. I thought mr. Hitchens got off to a good start and although I agreed with where Douglas Wilson went with his arguments I wished he’d have let Mr Hitchen’s take him there. I would’ve hoped he would’ve taken the road Hitchens was leading him down instead of going down his own… Love the way he writes and his humour but it didn’t seem to tackle his opening statement as directly as I would’ve liked. For me Mr Hitchens follow up in part two is somewhat understandable then, but totally disappointing and if I was giving points Hitchens loses big ones in part 2.

Finalizing is kind of important.

For the benefit of anyone in the future that goes googling for info on recovering un-finalized DVD’s I’ll post what has worked for me.  Our Lite-On VCR/DVD Recorder died after burning 20 or so family home video’s off the camcorder and old VHS. The old camcorder vids had subsequently been taped over in the holiday memory capturing frenzy so if we didn’t get the un-finalized DVD’s working the memories would be lost forever.

These un-finalized DVD’s were’nt readable by any of our DVD players or computer and came up with an Error or said the disk contained no data. After some searching and mucking about I found I was able to pull the .VOB files (which contain the video data) off the DVD’s and onto my hard drive with ISObuster  and then re-compile the DVD’s, menu’s, and chapters with Nero Vision then burn a new DVD.  It’s a lot of work and there may be an easier way that I didn’t find but it’s a great relief to know that I’m able to save what I thought were coasters and lost memories.

First steps

Our youngest has been ‘cruising’ for a few weeks now. Yesterday I came home from work, opened the door and here he is coming towards me, little shuffling steps, arms up and outstretched to greet me.  I think that will be an enduring memory.   I hope…
