I like,…like.
Wild kingdom
Took a different bus home last night and consequently had to get off in a different area. I figured where I got off I could short-cut through a highschool field and get home quicker. It was dark and there was a soccor game going on under lights which interested me. As I walked I saw a few groups of teenage kids hanging about an adjacent park and was consious of the fact that I was nervous.
It was almost the same feeling of caution you might get walking past a rottweiler or being introduced to some wild animal that your told ‘might bite’. You know the kind of thing; act confident and like you know where you’re going, don’t look at them in the eye but don’t look like you’re not looking at them, don’t get too close, don’t pet them… Why? Why is any conglomeration of youth now an entity deserving caution? I’ve heard too many horror stories in the news and papers of sensless violence by groups of kids and have had experiences that have made me think if conditions had only been slightly different I might have ended up on the receiving end of something not really very nice. I know there are lots of great kids out there but the few and it seems growing population of youth that have less regard for other people and see violence as an way to alleviate bordom or communicate power in a peer group have ruined it for everyone. I don’t perceive its always been this way but I also don’t think it will get better because I think it has entirely to do with changes in cultural attitudes that the populace in general sees nothing wrong with.
At least I had my puffy winter jacket on, concealing the possability that I might have 20″ biceps or a concealed weapon of some sort…
