Run Forest! Run!
This morning I slept through my alarm a bit which necessitated catching a later bus to the last train from Maple Meadows to downtown. I’ve taken this bus before and thought I knew when I was to leave. As I walked out to the street I looked down the road to where my bus stop was in the distance. There was the 701. I hesitated-could I make it to the next bus stop before he did if I ran? Then, like a deer catching wind of danger, I turned on my heel and ran. I ran faster and farther than I would have thought possible for legs that are largel sedentary and spend the greater part of any day under a desk. I’m sure had I been timed it would’ve been an Olympic record or something. I thought my feet might not have been touching the ground at some points. It was epic.
Alas it was for naught as my earlier hesitation cost me precious seconds as the bus slid past me. Luckily a very old man was just getting to the bus stop as well and the driver had to wait as this gentleman shuffled up the steps which gave me the opportunity I needed. I had made it!
I was surprised I was still able to run like that. It felt really good. But the effects of my inactivity showed in my recovery. On came the nausea and lightheadedness and wobbly legs as I stood at the train platform. I thought maybe I broke my stomach and I could feel a headache coming on.
Funny enough about 5 minutes before the train arrived another 701 pulled in. Turns out I could’ve just waited leisurely for the next bus and still made the train.
Bugger.
Maybe a titch of acoholism would be good for me…
Last night I found a Men’s Health article via Lifehacker.com that recommended 2 alcoholic drinks a day for good heath, noting a lower risk of heart attack and decreased amounts of abdominal fat. This sounds like win win win to me so I tried to sell the idea to Amy. She wasn’t going for it. Particularly as she has a tendency to mention this or that home remedy, wives tale, news report, or something her sister told her about this causing cancer or being bad for you; all of which adversely affects the number and amount of yummy things I’m allowed to eat, so I invariably will poo-poo all this medical advise as hog-wash. This was her chance for a little passive aggressive revenge. I responded reasonably with “So you WANT me to get a fat belly and have a heart attack, THATS what you’re saying?” (thats logical right?)
This response was met with a disapproving look and simple but effective retort “You don’t need it”.
Anyway, I’m going to get a bottle of wine and see if my spare tire starts to recede with a consistant regimen of booze…it can’t hurt…can it?
Quesnel
After a 12 hour drive (almost to the minute) we made if to Quesnel. The drive was great owing to grandmas comfortable Camry, a DVD player ( which wasn’t utilized as much as I expected), and beautiful scenery all the way.
Looking forward to the ‘ghost town’ of Barkerville tomorrow. Being a period attraction with rides and shows I hope some history shines through the inevitable cheese. The men who came out to these places in such inhospitable conditions with no guarantees, only dreams of gold is so interesting. Digging huge pits or panning endless rivers, success bringing small populations of fortune seekers together and building towns. And then with the inevitable lost fortunes as resources are exhausted, moving on leaving an abandoned shell of a town…eventually being repopulated by actors and costing a fortune to get into (kids under 5 free)
Lets drive far.
I’m about to embark on a test. It will be a test of all my resources. Such things as my endurance, patience, character, strength, and will, will be pushed to their limits. Actually its a couple weeks off work. Most would classify that as a holiday. But it becomes much more than that when what’s involved is a an extremely long road trip to Northern BC in a sedan with your wife, two rambunctious little boys and your mother. Tylenol anyone?
Actually this trip will be a lot of fun. The boys have never been on a really long trip, although I’ve been up in that area before Amy’s never been that far north in BC, and we’ve family to see. Also an opportunity to play with our new D300. We’ll be coming back through Jasper and visit Lake Louise which has to be good for at least a good image or two.
And I’m sure upon return we’ll all be better off for the prolonged close quarters confinement with each other. right?
